Season Greetings

Hi everybody! Just a short note to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year! I believe that we all did fairly well in 2011, we can only do better in 2012! In 2013 we will be celebrating our 30th year anniversary as an Association. Perhaps we can have some thoughts about this over the next year and have a really smashing anniversary celebration! We will announce the time and location of our AGM when we are up to speed, probably not untill March or thereabouts. Looking forward to seeing you all in the next year, once again, best wishes from Dave and Roberta.

Year to date results....

Here are the year to date results for Winter Series 2011/12

The race on Sunday was an all out horse race.  We enjoy 15 to 20 knot winds and with reefed sails we roared up and down the course.  Credo squeaked 1st, with Marty (singled handed) a close second.  Siren's Song joined us for the day and took third.  It turned out to be a good days, with no rain during the race.

Thanks to Brian for taking the Commodores role for the day.

Check out the pictures by clicking the icon on the right of the home page.

Next Race is scheduled for November 12th.. Keep in touch for updates.

Sunday Race, October 30th, noon at the dock for skippers meeting.

We're going to call the race and trust the weather report remains favourable.

Please meet at the dock for noon.  We will be using Marty's dinghy for the committee boat again and will set up a course accordingly.  If there is anyone who can volunteer to man the committee boat, this would be great.  Marty has done it the last two times and it's time for a switch.  I may be able to do it, but can't commit absolutely yet as I "may" have other obligations.  At any rate, I'm sure we'll figure it out.

We have a new boat that wishes to joint us.  Paul on "Siren’s Song" would like to be involved and needs a few seasoned crew to help.  Let's communicate on that one as we go.  Paul needs a crew with some experience.  I have a few names in mind.

The winds look good and the rain looks tolerable.

Keep checking the blog for updates.

Thanks,

See you there.

Suggested New Racing Course

Hi gang, because your commodore will be out of commission for awhile and therefore also the committee vessel, Satch came up with what I thought to be the ideal solution. May I point out to the people that don't have the chart, it is Prince Rupert Harbour number 3958. Good to have, especially if you are racing!
This course is approximately 10 nautical miles long. It requires no marker buoys to be set out and eliminates the need for a committee vessel. It also ensures that all boats can participate, without having to sacrifice a race day to be a committee vessel. As you pass the start marker, each individual skipper will mark the time. As he/she passes the finish marker, he/she will note the time. He/she will then figure out how long it took him/her to do the course and pass this on to Sailmaster Paul, or his Deputy, Marty. They, in turn will then do the handicap thing and post who the winners were. (We're all winners, right?)
To start the race, Paul or Marty will give the 10 minute, 5 minute warnings on VHF Channel 05 USA mode, then holler Start! Start! Start! at the time for start. Please, get a chart, put your VHF on Channel 05 and listen carefully at the skipper's meeting!
Here is the proposed course.
Start and finish marker will be the square marker on the end of our breakwater. You will proceed South East about 3 nautical miles to the Bifurcation buoy opposite Fairview. Round that on your Starboard side. Head NorthWest, about 1 nautical mile to McIntosh Rock, just East of Tobey Point.  Come around that with your starboard side and head NorthWest down the length of the harbour untill you reach Schreiber Point, about 4.2 nautical miles. (If there is a log ship loading logs, you can use that as a marker) just NorthWest of Seal Cove CCG base. Turn there and proceed with great speed and agility to the finish marker at our breakwater, about 1.5 nautical miles. Congratulations to the winner!  Watch out for floatplanes landing or taking off around Seal Cove, as soon as they are in the water, they are under the Rules of the Road, the same ones as you are. If you want, the course can be run in reverse, that can be decided at the Skipper's meeting. The depths around the two Rocks are good, even at low tide. So, let us hear from you before the next race, share your thoughts and suggestions. We now have to call the Port Authority to announce our racing schedule ahead of time, Paul or Marty will do this. They claim it is because the Port is getting busier, they are concerned on a basis of safety. Fair winds and sporting races, thanks, Commodore Dave.

The Sunday 16th of October Race results are shown below.....

Image Detail  Mr. T

Delrita is off to a great start for the 2011 Winter Series.... With his dashing good looks and his casual air of confidence, Mr. T dared to show the crying towel to the rest of the fleet.    Once again Mr T showed that with a careful approach and well choreographed series of maneuvers and spurts of speed, that his diminative size need not be a detriment to a satisfactory conclusion.  Indeed,...who needs the crying towel now?.

Delrita first again, followed by the new contendor Corrisa. All hail the new contender, now taking their rightful place near head of the fleet. More to come, it should be a good year.

Credo and Wild Abandon began the race nowhere near the start line, having forgotten that although the start was signalled with the five minute warning, that time travels faster as one ages.

Footloose began the day terrifically ahead of the fleet. Despite an inexperienced crew and difficult conditions placed a very respectable 4th... and we are told that he will be able to turn the boat, unobstructed, in time for the next race.

And last, but most certainly not least, Krystona.. having suffered yet another wardrobe malfunction did manage to rescue the spinnaker from the deep six and finished the race in respectable time.

Tentative next race,... Oct 29th.

It's a small thing but thought I'd share this with you...

Hello Paul,

Thank you for sending your message to Environment Canada.
Sometimes it seems that there is no mention of winds for tomorrow in the marine forecast but it only means that the conditions described are expected to continue for the remainder of the forecast period (tomorrow).  The mean reason for this is to keep the marine forecasts as short as possible (this is important when it comes to broadcasting the forecasts on Weatheradio where the allotted time slot is limited).  Note that all messages are sent to the appropriate managers for their information and consideration.
Best regards,
Luc Lamontagne

Early Planning

Greetings! One of our members has suggested that we look into a group cruise to Alaska in the coming year. I would like you to gather some thoughts and destinations and look at your time schedules before the AGM. We will put this on the Agenda for the AGM and see what we can come up with. Bring your dates that you are available to cruise and the destinations that you would like to sail to in that time slot. Gather information over the Net about cruising in Alaska, for example, you must have a holding tank - or porta potty, in all Alaskan ports of call. You cannot use your ordinary head, except in offshore waters. I am sure you can find all sorts of other regulations! I will try to get in touch with some yacht clubs up there, to see if we can get a deal on moorage. Yes, the non-members that race with us should also be invited to participate. I have no time frame for the AGM at this time, however, with lots of advance warning, we should be able to have at least an idea of how many can participate and what dates that we are looking at, as well as possible destinations. Cheers, Dave.

MOSS program thanks

A collective thank you to the people who made the MOSS program a success in our community! Thanks to Paul and Leslie for doing most of the organizing and collecting data and monies. Thanks to Mae and Marty for, not only providing all the great pictures (and the gold for the pirates on the last day), but also for providing billet for the two young instructors! A great success for the kids who participated, (NCSA provided funding for one child) and all over town we heard favourable comments from excited and greatful parents! One child was asked, "Would you like to do this again next year" and he replied "I would like to do this again this year!"  Which brings the question, "Do we do this again next year?" I believe the answer will be a resounding "Yes!"  Congratulations to the "MOSS Team". Commodore Dave.

BC Mobile Optimist Sailing School Aug. 1-5, 2011

From August 1 to 5, BC MOSS program ran for the first time Prince Rupert in many years.  The program took place at Diana Lake where 15 excited students took part.  For the most part, the weather cooperated for the eager sailors.  Thank you very much to Sam and Peter who made the program exciting for the students.  Great thanks to Paul and Leslie Bull for making this possible and all those who helped out during the week.

Sailpast highlights Sunday 12th Jun

It was a great Sunday! The weather was a bit off, but no rain and a bit of wind for a good sail afterwards! We mustered at 1115 Sunday morning, just off the Cow Bay dock. The lead vessel this year was the new Charles Hayes. Followed by the Point Henry and her RIB, then the Eagle Bay Oil recovery Vessel. Then it was our turn! Albacore ll up front with the banner on her port side, followed by Delrita, Sea Chips, Wild Abandon and Peri Peri. There was a few boats behind us, some pleasure and some rescue and the RCMP launch. After we showed our stuff in front of the crowd at Kwinitsa Station and Lightering Dock, we rafted up outside the boom and enjoyed lunch and companionship while watching the Cormorant Helicopter working with the Point Henry. The helicopter is 1.2 mtrs longer than the Point Henry! There was also a show put on by the Pathfinder, the newer Pilot boat. We joined in the Fleet Blessing. The fly past of various helicopters and floatplanes and even Hawk Air was fun, but noisy! Thanks to the crew of Wild Abandon for the feast of fresh prawns, crab and salmon pate!! Excellent! We also enjoyed the antics of Glen and his son on his new acquistion, a Hobie Cat, including high speed runs and two capsizes! After lunch most sailed off to enjoy the rest of the afternoon, with a bit of a SE wind to help them along. This is the best turn-out in years, thanks to you who showed up and participated! Next year we will have an even larger turn-out, won't we? Yes!

Sailpast at Seafest

Hi everyone, just a friendly reminder on two thing, one being the Sailpast and the other on having a safe summer. On Sunday, 12th June, we muster at the PRRYC (Cow Bay) at 1100 hours. Channel 14 on the VHF, the organizer is the "Beachmaster". Please get your forms e-mailed in, in case the PO goes on strike. It is the farewell to the Point Henry as well, so please turn up to show her respect for jobs well done, she will be decommissioned later this year. Also, of course, the blessing of the fleet, some of us, like Steve, for example, really need this blessing! In the matter of safety, I heard with sadness today of an incident in two commercial troller acquaintances of mine. You have seen this troller in Prince Rupert many times over the years, I am sure, the "Ocean Gem". Cetoled in butternut, quite distinctive. Fred and Elaine were starting their fishing season by going out early to the West coast of the Charlottes and enjoying a few days beachcombing before their season started. I am not aware of all the details, but their skiff capsized, she made it to the beach, Fred didn't. She was on the beach for 7 days before someone came along! Think on that for a moment, a quiet trip to the beach, going to get some treasures, it ends up with the death of her husband and 7 days on a cold beach with nothing, absolutely nothing! I implore you all to be extra careful this summer, please entertain the thought of purchasing a SPOT, if you like, I can demonstrate with mine, my wife has one as well. It was $69- each and $100- each every year for the sattelite fee, well worth it. What is a SPOT? It is a personal E-PIRB. You carry it in your pocket and anywhere in the world you have - as many "I'm OK messages" to your family as you want to send and the 911 feature, which gets the best help to you quickly in an emergency situation - land, sea or air. Google SPOT if you will, I am sure that will answer any questions that you have. No, Steve, I do not get kickbacks from SPOT! See you Sunday, Cheers, Dave -  be safe!

Final Results for the Winter Series....

Apparently,  the "Committee" boat gets an automatic first.  Who new?  Marty tells me this is so everyone gets an incentive to be the committee boat through out the year.   By my calculations Dave on "Albacore" should be the series winner... Great return to racing for the club, hopefully we'll get a good response again for next years Winter Series.
